The history of the Santali language, also known as the “Hor-Ror” or “Language of Man”, is as follows:
Pre-written language
Before the 19th century, Santali was an oral language, with knowledge passed down from generation to generation.
Early written attempts
In the 1860s, European missionaries, anthropologists, and folklorists began writing Santali in Roman, Bengali, and Odia scripts.
Ol Chiki script
In 1925, Mayurbhanj poet Raghunath Murmu created the Ol Chiki script for Santali, which was first published in 1939. Ol Chiki is the official script for Santali in West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand, and is widely accepted by the Santal community.
National Eligibility Test
In 2013, the University Grants Commission of India introduced Santali to the National Eligibility Test, allowing lecturers to use it in colleges and universities.
The Santali language is an Austro-Asiatic language, related to Vietnamese and Khmer, but not to Indo-European languages. The Santals are known to be strong-minded in protecting their language, and have managed to keep it intact despite foreign influences.
